Husband and wife Gil Shaham and Adele Anthony give a duo recital in the magnificent acoustics of Harris Concert Hall. Saying “listening to bad music sometimes inspires good ideas,” Prokofiev wrote his excellent two-violin sonata after hearing a mediocre work for two violins. Full of the harmonic and rhythmic excitement of Eastern European folk melodies, Bartók’s duos were designed for students to play as they learned all the intricacies of the instrument and of music-making.
The rest of the program brings further two-violin gems. Wieniawski’s Etudes-Caprices are full of virtuosic challenges. AMFS artist-faculty member Anton Nel joins in for a high-spirited work by Moszkowski which all but disappeared until the composer reworked it for standard piano trio upon his publisher’s request. The final work is by Australian composer Julian Milone, who arranged music for the wedding of Prince Charles to Camilla Parker-Bowles.
