Celebrated by The New York Times as “a powerful singer with a warm, seductive tone,” Grammy Award-winning mezzo Michelle DeYoung returns to Aspen for a world premiere drawn from Shakespeare’s Othello and Mahler’s five songs set to poems by Friedrich Rückert. The collection includes “Do not look at my songs,” a warning to the listener to not be overly curious about the creative process, the ravishing “I breathed a gentle fragrance,” the dark and ultimately affirmative “At Midnight,” “I am lost to the world,” with its aura of peaceful resignation, and “If you love for beauty,” a gift to Mahler’s wife Alma.
