The New York Times called Nikolai Lugansky a “keenly intelligent pianist who values textural clarity, searches out inner details, and strives to convey the structural underpinnings of a piece.” He burst on to the scene after winning the Silver Medal at the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition.
Written while Tchaikovsky was completing his first ballet Swan Lake, The Seasons was commissioned by the editor of a St. Petersburg music magazine who offered his readers a new composition every month for a year. Although Tchaikovsky said of the project, “I continue to bake musical pancakes. Today I tossed the tenth,” he nevertheless produced a set of melodic jewels.
Lugansky has established an extraordinary reputation playing works by Chopin and Rachmaninoff all over the world, and his profound sensitivity and depth will shine in his performances of their works.
Also see Nikolai Lugansky perform with orchestra on July 16.
