Sharon Isbin, multi Grammy Award–winning guitarist and winner of the Toronto, Munich and Madrid competitions, gives as many as 100 performances each season. Sharon Isbin & Friends: Guitar Passions (Sony) was a number one bestseller on, and includes guests Stanley Jordan, Romero Lubambo, and Steve Vai. She received Grammy Awards for Dreams of a World, concertos by Christopher Rouse and Tan Dun, and Journey to the New World, which spent sixty-three weeks on top Billboard charts. Ms. Isbin’s twenty-five CDs include Bach’s lute suites prepared with Rosalyn Tureck, Scorsese’s Oscar-winning The Departed soundtrack, and concertos written for her by Corigliano, Foss, and Schwantner. She received a Latin Grammy nomination for concertos with the New York Philharmonic, their only guitar recording. Other honors include Germany’s Echo Klassik Award, Gramophone’s Recording of the Year, and Guitar Player’s Best Guitarist award. Recent highlights include tours with mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, a twenty-city “Guitar Passions” tour, and the premiere of Chris Brubeck’s concerto Affinity. Author of the Classical Guitar Answer Book and founding director of Juilliard’s guitar department, she was also artistic director-soloist of festivals she created for Carnegie Hall and NPR.
