Mary Duncan SteidlBack To Artist-Faculty
Mary Duncan Steidl, director, spent three seasons at the Kennedy Center Mozart Festival where she directed The Impresario, Bastien und Bastienne, and La Clemenza di Tito with the National Symphony Orchestra, Sir Christopher Hogwood, conductor. At Brooklyn Academy of Music, she directed Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia and Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. She directed American premieres of Bizet’s La Jolie Fille de Perth and Nielson’s Maskarade with Sarasota Opera. As associate artistic director at Berkshire Opera, she directed fifteen productions including Summer by Stephen Paulus, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Floyd’s Susannah, and Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Her staging of Menotti’s The Consul was recorded by Newport Classic and The Magic Flute, with designs by acclaimed children’s book artist Eric Carle aired on PBS. For The Aspen Opera Center she directed “The Seven Deadly Sins,” “Cole Porter: Let's Misbehave,” and The Marriage of Figaro. She has been on faculty at The Juilliard School, where she also choreographed Barber’s Vanessa and Schuman’s The Mighty Casey, and was guest faculty at Rice University where she directed Rorem’s Our Town. She studied at A.R.T at Harvard, and is a graduate of Juilliard.
