Staged Opera Performances

Two fully staged opera and one semi-staged opera showcase the student talents in all roles, with a full student orchestra. Leading professionals direct, conduct, and coach.

MOZART: The Magic Flute
July 16 and 18 at 7 pm | July 20 at 8 pm | $85, $50, $25 obstructed
(See below for info on July 20 Opera Gala)
This fantastical fairy tale, written as a "people's opera," is a comedic romp, but also a mythological story with layers of deeper psychological and social meaning. Young Prince Tamino enters a quest to win the hand of Princess Pamina, accompanied by his comic feathered friend Papageno. Facing fire and fury, he has nary more than a magic flute to protect him on his heroic journey.

THOMSON: The Mother of Us All
August 5 at 8 pm | Harris Concert Hall | $40, open to passholders.
Commemorating the 100-year anniversary of woman's suffrage, this lyrical opera chronicles the life of Susan B. Anthony. The New York Times noted the "superb" score and the "extraordinary" libretto by Gertrude Stein together create "magic." Semi-staged.

RICKY IAN GORDON: The Grapes of Wrath
August 20 and 22 | 7 pm | $35, $25 obstructed, open to passholders
Based on the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel of 1939 by John Steinbeck, this was dubbed "the Great American opera" by Musical America. With heartfelt music embracing the Americanisms of open harmonies and simple song, the powerful story follows the sharecroppers reeling from the devastation of the Dust Bowl on their native Oklahoma lands.
