RAVEL: Piano Concerto in G major
MOZART: Requiem in D minor, K. 626
Pianist Lise de la Salle has been hailed by Gramophone magazine as a “talent in a million,” and The Washington Post, in a recent review, said that she “played so well that, for much of the concert, the audience had to remember to breathe.” Hear de la Salle in a performance of Ravel’s infectious, jazz-infused, and, at times, ethereal Piano Concerto in G major.
Seraphic Fire’s Professional Choral Institute at AMFS is the only summer program in the country that trains up-and-coming talents for a career in ensemble singing. Students in the program join forces with members of Seraphic Fire’s professional vocal ensemble to perform Mozart’s hauntingly beautiful Requiem, based on the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. Mozart died while composing this work, which, famously, was commissioned by a patron who didn’t reveal his identity to Mozart but turned out to be Count Franz von Walsegg. Over the past two centuries, numerous musicians — beginning with Mozart’s pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr, whom Mozart dictated notes to while he was dying — have made their own completed versions of this unforgettable work.
