HOWARD SHORE: Billy's Theme from The Departed
CHRIS BRUBECK: Affinity: Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra
RODRIGO: Concierto de Aranjuez
Called the “pre-eminent guitarist of our time” by Boston Magazine and “the Monet of the guitar” by the Atlanta Journal, Grammy Award winner Sharon Isbin performs Chris Brubeck’s Affinity: Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, composed for her in 2015. With styles ranging from jazz to pop to new age to classical, and including a tender slow movement dedicated to his late father Dave, Brubeck’s piece received an enthusiastic ovation at its premiere.
Also on the program are Howard Shore’s haunting theme from Martin Scorcese’s film The Departed, and Rodrigo’s popular Concierto de Aranjuez, inspired by the gardens at the palace of Spanish kings. The hushed regret of the slow movement was composed in the shadow of a miscarriage suffered by Rodrigo’s wife during her first pregnancy and displays an aching beauty.
