Joel Ayau, senior coach Back To Artist-Faculty
A graduate of the Cafritz Young Artist Program of the Washington National Opera, pianist and coach Joel Ayau has assisted on more than ten productions at Washington National Opera, including Samson et Dalila, Aida, and Eugene Onegin. Most recently, in June 2021 he assisted in the recording of Jeanine Tesori’s opera, Blue, with conductor Roderick Cox. He has also worked on the music staffs of North Carolina Opera, Portland Opera, Opera Omaha, Wolf Trap Opera, and the Castleton Festival. Since 2018, Mr. Ayau has assisted in the preparation of operas, musicals, and oratorios at the National Symphony Orchestra, serving as cover conductor for over twenty concerts and pianist in numerous rehearsals and performances. His concert appearances include recitals at Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and National Concert Hall in Taipei, in collaboration with Andrea Bocelli, Frederica von Stade, George Shirley, Kathryn Lewek, Zach Borichevsky, Russell Thomas, and Renée Fleming. He holds a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Michigan in collaborative piano, having studied under renowned pedagogue Martin Katz, and holds a Master's Degree in Collaborative Piano from The Juilliard School. An esteemed coach of Russian, French, German, and Italian, Mr. Ayau also speaks Mandarin Chinese. He is the founder of www.operatracks.com.
