STRAVINSKY/JONATHAN MCPHEE The Rite of Spring
Get ready for big sounds in this dynamic program! Finnish composer Marcus Lindberg wants his music to grab your ears and your body and not let go. In Arena, you’ll find him at his most sensual. Next you’ll hear this summer’s Brass and Percussion Competition winner in a show of virtuosity, followed by one of the most revolutionary pieces ever written. If you were a Parisian out for a pleasant night on the town at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées on May 29, 1913, the last thing you were expecting was a riot with fistfights and flying debris. The legendary reaction to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring ballet was actually in response to Nijinsky’s shocking choreography, not to the musical score. This iconic work with its groundbreaking rhythmic complexities and often savage depiction of pagan rites has maintained its visceral impact, and continues to fascinate, provoke, and even shock audiences more than 100 years after its legendary debut. Fasten your seat belt and prepare for an intense auditory ride!
Hear orchestral masterworks and see the conducting stars of tomorrow. Each movement of each work is conducted by a different student conductor, each of whom plays in the orchestra when not on the podium. Program Director and AMFS Music Director Robert Spano observes the work of his students at this weekly event.
Performances will be 75 minutes and there will be no intermission.
