STRAVINSKY/ARAM ARAKELYAN, STEPHEN WYRCZYNSKI: The Rite of Spring
CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO: Sonata for Violin and Cello, op. 14
AMFS Artist-Faculty, all top musicians from renowned orchestras, opera companies, and conservatories, come together to play their favorite chamber music works.
Hear Stravinsky’s revolutionary The Rite of Spring as you’ve never heard it before—in an arrangement for viola and piano! Following that is another instrumental tour de force, Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Sonata for Violin and Cello, which the composer himself doubted could be performed. Having fled Mussolini’s Italy in 1939 because of the violent anti-Semitism of the time, Castelnuovo-Tedesco made his home in Beverly Hills and wrote this harmonically and contrapuntally rich piece in 1950.
This dazzling program is topped off with the world-renowned Puerto Rican soprano Ana María Martínez in Ravel’s three exotic Madagascan Songs, titled “Nahandove, ô belle Nahandove,” “Ow, beware of white people,” and “It is sweet to lie down during the heat.”
Also featured on the program is the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, comprising emerging young artists who perform music by prominent living composers and twentieth-century classics, as well as new works by the Festival’s student composers. Always a joyful and creative 75 minutes of music-making.
