BRITTEN: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Enjoy a fully staged production of Britten’s masterpiece based on Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identities, angst-ridden lovers, and surprising transformations, all in the intimate setting of the historic, 400-seat Wheeler Opera House.
Simon Godwin, artistic director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., and previously associate director of London’s National Theatre, takes a side step from theater proper to bring his deep knowledge of the Bard to directing this production of a much-loved fantastical tale.
American countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo sings the role of Oberon, joining the rising opera talents of the Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS program in the production’s other leading roles. The brilliant Dame Jane Glover—a mentee of Benjamin Britten himself—conducts the opera orchestra and the voices of the Colorado Children’s Chorale from Denver. Don’t miss this delightful romp!
The opera will also be performed on July 20 at 7 pm.
