PHILIP GLASS/MICHAEL RIESMAN: Suite from The Hours
J. S. BACH: Keyboard Concerto No. 2 in E major, BWV 1053
---
PHILIP GLASS: Piano Concerto No. 1 "Tirol Concerto"

06

Called “an artist of strikingly original ideas and irrefutable integrity” by The Washington Post, Simone Dinnerstein made musical waves in 2007 with her distinctive interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Here she spans the worlds of Philip Glass and Bach.

Glass’s First Piano Concerto resulted from a commission from the Tyrol, Austria, tourist board. After studying recordings and scores from the region, Glass incorporated folk music source material in a composition for the first time. Bach’s affable and cheery Keyboard Concerto No. 2 is sometimes played as the oboe concerto from which Bach apparently recycled the piece. It must have been a favorite of his since he used all three movements again in cantatas. The performance will also feature Glass’s three-movement suite from the film The Hours, a movie nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Grammy.

Hear one of the piano world’s most individualistic voices when Dinnerstein returns to Harris Concert Hall!
