Enjoy the rich timbres of wind instruments in this varied and engaging program!

Longtime AMFS artist-faculty member and oboe virtuoso Elaine Douvas conducts top young wind artists in an arrangement of Brahms’s imaginative and ingratiating Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Fellow AMFS artist-faculty member Darrett Adkins joins for Ibert’s delightful Concerto for Cello and Winds, which ends with a puckish jig.

Vaughan Williams wrote the witty second-movement scherzo of his Eighth Symphony for winds alone, in contrast to the following movement, which was scored for strings only. Hear the unusual combination of winds, kettledrums, and xylophone in Tcherepnin’s Sonatine, composed in France in 1939.

Recitals run approximately 90 to 110 minutes and vary based on programming.
