Percussion

The Aspen Music Festival and School percussion department offers the opportunity to play premier assignments alongside artist-faculty from major U.S. orchestras or as principal in a variety of ensembles. Important Program Information

  • Applicants should submit the Scholarship Request Form for access to all funding opportunities.
  • VIDEO audition recordings are required.
  • All full-session percussion applicants are eligible for the Charles Owen Memorial Fellowship, awarded to the most outstanding percussion applicant.
  • Applicants interested in the timpani fellowship must submit the additional required excerpts.
  • Students under the age of 18 do not play in orchestra but may take private lessons and participate in chamber music.

  • Applicants will be asked to provide contact information for two individuals who can speak to their qualifications. 
  • All applicants must submit a video audition. Audition repertoire must be submitted IN THE ORDER LISTED. VIDEO recording is required, on ONE TRACK, without breaks, and with NO SPLICING. Auditions that do not comply with these guidelines will not be considered. See Audition Repertoire below for more details.

Audition Repertoire

STANDARD PERCUSSION REPERTOIRE
Audition repertoire must be submitted IN THE ORDER LISTED BELOW. VIDEO recording is required, on ONE TRACK, without breaks, and with NO SPLICING. Auditions that do not comply with these guidelines will not be considered.

MARIMBA 

  • One movement of a Bach Sonata, Partita, or Suite for Violin, Lute, or Cello 
    (3–4 minutes maximum, no repeats)

SNARE DRUM 

  • DELECUSE: Etude No. 1, Keiskleriana, Book 1 — beginning through No. 5
  • SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 10, Movement II — rehearsal 98 to the end
  • PROKOFIEV: Lieutenant Kijé Suite, Movement I — 13 to the end

XYLOPHONE 

  • SHOSTAKOVICH: The Age of Gold, “Polka” — mm. 6–14
  • GERSHWIN: Porgy and Bess — opening
  • BARTÓK: Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, Movement IV — mm. 173 – mm. 183 ( add doubles beginning on beat 4 of mm. 180 )

GLOCKENSPIEL 

  • DUKAS: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice — mm. 17–20

TAMBOURINE 

  • DVOŘÁK: Carnival Overture — Letter Q through S

TIMPANI 

  • TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 4 — 2 bars before Letter T; stop 18 bars after Letter T
  • HINDEMITH: Symphonic Metamorphosis — one continuous passage:
    • Start 12 bars before T and play through T
    • Rest 10 bars in time
    • Continue at the 5th bar of V and play through the 8th bar of W
